Purpose:
The purpose of this study is to gain more comprehensive information on the prevalence of ophthalmological involvement in Behcet’s syndrome patients in Tehran.
Methods:
In this cross-sectional study, Field data collection was performed on 64 patients with Behcet’s. The patients were asked about age, sex, family history of Behcet’s syndrome, duration of suffering with the disease and the kind of ophthalmological involvement they were dealing with. The gathered information was analyzed with SPSS.
Results:
52 of the 64 patients were male (81.3%) while 12 patients were female (18.7%). The age average of the patients was 22.25. 10 patients had family history of Behcet’s syndrome. The average of disease duration was 3.03 years with the standard deviation of 2/1. Ocular complications were detected in 54 of the patients(84.4%). Types of ophthalmological involvements were the following: Panuveitis (32.8%), Ant.Uveitis (34.4%), Retinal vasculitis (32.8%).
Conclusion:
This study revealed that sex did not affect the occurrence of ophthalmological involvements, but it affected the type of ophthalmological involvement in the patients, with panuveitis most prevalent in men and retinal vasculitis most prevalent in women. There was a significant difference in occurrence of ocular complications in patients without the family history(94.4%) and patients with a positive family history(30%) for the disease which might be a result of the regular follow up the patients with positive family history perform. In conclusion, ophthalmological involvement seems to be a prevalent complication of Behcet’s syndrome and further studies on the condition is suggested.
