Purpose:
To evaluate the anatomical outcomes of corneal patch graft in patients with scleral necrosis secondary to plaque radiotherapy
Methods:
The study was a prospective interventional case series. Four patients with sclera necrosis and history of plaque radiotherapy underwent corneal patch graft in a tertiary care center.
Results:
Ciliary body involvement was evident in all cases. Plaque radiotherapy was performed using Ru-106 plaques. All patients had received radiation dose of 400 Gy or more to the tumor base. The mean time interval between plaque radiotherapy and scleral necrosis was 25months ( range, 18-34 months). Corneal patch graft was performed to strengthen the sclera and to improve appearance of the eye. Donor cornea was received from the Eye Bank. Each graft was secured into place with interrupted 10-0 nylon sutures. No patients experienced graft thinning, rejection, infection, or tumor recurrence in mean follow up of 14 months(range,6-24 months).
Conclusion:
Corneal patch graft is well tolerated in patients with sclera necrosis secondary to plaque radiotherapy and associated with good cosmetic results.
