Purpose:
to evaluate the changes of the aqueous flare in eyes with keratoconus following cross-linking (CXL) surgery
Methods:
consecutive eyes with keratoconus which underwent CXL surgery were included in this interventional before-after study. The amount of aqueous flare before cross-linking as well as respective changes at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after CLX surgery were evaluated using laser flare photometery.
Results:
25 eyes were entered into the study. Before the cross-linking, the mean flare value was 4.52±2.1 ph/ms. The flare values observed at week one (6.8 ph/ms; P=0.054 ), month one (6.9 ph/ms; P=0.002), and month three (6.6 ph/ms; P<0.001) after the surgery were significantly higher compared to baseline state. Flare value were consistent from week one up to the last follow up (month three) visit (P=0.93).
Conclusion:
CXL in patients with keratoconus may cause substantial elevation of aqueous flare which remains elevated up to three months after surgery.
