Eye removal surgery may be necessary as the endpoint of severe eye trauma, pain relief in a blind painful eye,intra orbital malignancies, intractable endophthalmitis, and sometimes for cosmetic reasons in a disfigured eye . this study have survied different indications of eye removal surgery and posed different causes.

This study investigated clinical records of all the patients referred to Yazd Shahid Sadoughi Hospital during the last 10 years for eye removal surgery

in this study 102 patients including 70 males (68.6%) and 32 females (31.4%) had undergone eye removal surgery.The most common cause of eye removal surgery was trauma (60.9%) including penetrating trauma (39.3%), blunt trauma (10.8%), and accident (10.8%). The second most frequent cause was painful blind eye in 16 cases (15.7%).The most frequent time interval between accident and surgery was less than two weeks for 37.2% of cases, two weeks to five years for 32.4% of cases, and more than five years for 30.4% of cases. As Table 2 shows, trauma was the most frequent cause of eye removal surgery in age group of 20 (78.9%),and age group of 20-50 (74.5%) , while it consisted just 21.4% of causes in age group of more than 50 years old.

Based on various studies, it seems that trauma has been the most frequent cause of eye removal surgery in Iran and some other countries. Furthermore, this study reveal that men underwent eye removal surgery due to trauma indicating more risk of trauma in men due to their profession and activity type.
