Purpose:
To investigate the effect of highly sensitive CRP (hsCRP) as an inflammatory risk factor on the retinal vascular diameter in different stages of diabetic retinopathy.
Methods:
160 patients with different stages of diabetic retinopathy (32 patients in each stage of mild, moderate, severe NPDR and early, HRC-PDR) were chosen consecutively in retina clinic. Fundus photography was performed and serum hsCRP level was checked. The vascular diameter of retinal arteries and veins after first devision were checked in four quadrants using Adobe Photoshop software. Vascular caliber correlation with hsCRP level was evaluated with SPSS software.
Results:
130 eyes from 68 patients completed the study. There was no correlation between arterial (p>0.05) and hsCRP level in any stage of diabetic retinopathy. The same results were repeated for venular caliber.
Conclusion:
There is no correlation between retinal vascular diameter and serum hsCRP level in any stage of diabetic retinopathy.
